“God Save The Queen” Mohawk/Fauxhawk Hat

Posted by Lydia Lee on Aug 04, 2011

I finally decided to tackle intarsia knitting with a fun-looking project from the pattern book Pretty in Punk. I’ve made some mohawk/fauxhawk hats, but a store near me sells just about every color of Lamb’s Pride Bulky wool that you can imagine, so I jumped at the chance to 1) challenge myself with something new, 2) impress myself for being completely awesome and incapable of failing at said new thing, and 3) spend more money then I needed to spend.

And because I’m vain and starving myself and must remain busy lest I stop and wonder why on earth I would ever do that, I knocked it out pretty fast.

It’s not too bad. There are little mistakes that bother me because it was a big project to take on–being completely new to intarsia knitting (minus my Jester Gnome). It’s also big on this mannequin head, but it fits me just fine. Overall, I think it looks decent. I have to shave the red yarn off of the white because it quite noticeably dulls the vibrancy of the white.

Pulled back a bit for a better idea of what it looks like fitted…

I’ll have a better idea about it after I shave it, but I can tell you that I am done with these hats for awhile. It’s too expensive and time-consuming to keep up with, and I have thoroughly clogged my kitchen sink with loose yarn from all the felting. Also, I’m not very happy with the instructions in this book and if I even begin to go into it, I’m going to burst a blood vessel in my temple, so instead I will leave with my relief that I didn’t actually buy this book (love the library!!), and a promise that I will eventually write an essay on all the “hip” knit books out there that shamelessly take your money and either don’t just plainly write out the instructions for the fabulous finished-product pictures you can see, or do, but give them to you incorrectly. I just love wasting time and money, don’t you?!?!

    You could sell that in a heartbeat if you needed to make your money back. It’s great!

    @Leila–I suppose so. :)

    Thank you, both!! Shaving it is difficult, though. The little red “hairs” are deep in the white nooks and crannies.

    That is Bad Ass! I would not change a thing. Shame I did not get a tan one with an orange mohawk and a ponytail. Maybe I’m to old for one, but I do have a ponytail. God save Lydia Lee from this madness, please…
